[...] Last July, I declared the intent to downsize my life and, more specifically, downsize my home. And I’m sure you recall that declaration. One cannot undertake a daily essay on a web site named for oneself with having an ego so large that one believes readers hang on, and remember, every word therein. [...]

[...] Here’s part of a message I sent to my friend, who had taken issue with this column I’d posted in which I declared that Obama and his wife, Michelle — who’d said that she felt proud of her country for the “first time” only recently — were causing people like me to wonder how much they actually liked the United States: I don’t define patriotism as automatically thinking your country is always right. To me, it’s recognizing that for all its (mostly correctable) flaws, your country still stands as mankind’s greatest experiment in freedom and self-rule. The Obamas, whether they mean to or not, have people wondering if they believe that. Their attachment to the U.S. comes across as conditional … as if the country still has something to prove to them. [...]

[...] You may recall that a couple of week ago I predicted that an American newspaper somewhere would soon abandon its Monday edition, being the first to break the taboo that daily publication is sacrosanct. Over the weekend, the News Sentinel in Knoxville, Tenn., announced that its Monday paper will be reduced to a “quick-read edition” consisting of two sections: A news section and a sports section, along with whatever classified advertising the paper has bamboozled from people who haven’t heard about Craigslist.
[...] This seems like a good time to remember that securities backed by pools of home loans are not, in and of themselves, bad things. In fact, they can be very good things. The creation of such investments two decades ago was one of the single greatest factors in the economic boom that began in the late 1980s and continued almost without interruption until now. (Go here for a short primer on this topic I wrote six months ago, and may readers forgive me for even dwelling on such a snooze-inducing subject — twice). [...]

[...] No kidding. Here is Howard’s rationale (which is similar to the explanation he provided here two days ago): I told Joe I’d paid $210 a night. In a follow-up email, I also mentioned that I had checked prices before coming to Raleigh, and the downtown Sheraton where I usually stay quoted us $179. Since I spent most of the day at McClatchy Interactive, which has offices closer to the Umstead, I’d have spent more than the difference on cab fare traveling back and forth from downtown.
[...] Still, it’s been strange to hear myself saying that I’m glad he’s going to Iraq. As I mentioned in a previous post, I became fully aware of what he faced on his first deployment only after he came home. The state of blissful ignorance I lived in while he was there was a one-time event. I can’t return to it. I know too much now. But as I ponder what the alternative could be for this deployment, I sense I’ve been given a small gift. [...]

Many thanks for your blog. (Oops, almost used an exclamation point.) I've enjoyed making it a part of my morning after following your column in the N&O. Great combination of insight, optimism, humor and fact-checking. I'll miss the blog, but wish you well with the paid jobs.
