I voted for McCain and it appears that we will indeed get four more years of anti-terrorism policy that will be generally indistinguishable from the past eight years.

Even before the election, Obama tacked back to the right by backing off his previous position to support the Bush Administration on FISA. After the election his troop withdrawal plan from Iraq will be remarkably similar to what it would have been under Bush. If he closes Guantanamo at all it will be because of rendition and/or the creation of another tribunal like system because you can’t simply put those detainees into the regular justice system. Reality hits you in the face rather hard when you actually have to leave the sidelines and have real responsibility.

Obama declared that it was his superior judgment on the Iraq War that disqualified his opponents as Presidential timber. Yet, he names Hillary Clinton, who voted for and supported the war, as Sec of State; reappoints Robert Gates, Bush’s SecDef, to the same position: and names retired Gen. James Jones who appeared with John McCain this year on the campaign trail as his Nat’l Security Advisor.

You can pretty well bet that Obama won’t be holding any personal diplomatic meetings soon, as he pledged he would, with Iran, North Korea or Cuba.

In other words, Bush bashing was an effective way to run for office but don’t be surprised if Obama’s foreign policy is not all that distinguishable from his predecessor.
