Never mind

Last night, I posted an entry which started like this:

“I found this story, about a woman and her daughter who waited outside on a cold night for a glimpse of Bill Clinton, buried on an inside page of yesterday’s News & Observer. The pair, Claudine and Maiah Carlisle, had gone to the Brier Creek Country Club in Raleigh, where a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton was being held. They went there only in the hope of seeing the ex-president.

“One part of the article leaped out at me. It said:

“It was near freezing [when they arrived], so they walked in the front door and waited on a sofa inside. At one point, former Gov. Jim Hunt came over and introduced himself.

“Claudine, who moved here from Georgia a year ago, did not recognize the four-term governor, but she said he was warm and gracious — more so than the manager who came by shortly before 9 p.m. to tell her to step outside.

“That helps you understand how Hunt got elected governor four times…”

The entry went on to discuss the difference between the personable Hunt and the something less-than-personable Hillary Clinton. While that may otherwise be a well-grounded observation, there’s one small problem with it: It’s now 8:23 a.m. today, and I just read in the paper that former Gov. Jim Hunt wasn’t anywhere near the Clinton fundraiser. (Details here; scroll down to the bottom.)

Sigh.

I had not read that article, but saw something today stating Hunt was no where near Brier Creek. A spokesman ( I guess retired Governors have spoekspeople) said he was on his way to Pinehurst, I believe. Which version is true?

The News & Observer has acknowledged that it made a mistake in saying Hunt had been there. I’ll have more on this tomorrow (but if you’ve got an appetite for wholesale media-bashing, I won’t make you happy; hey, stuff happens).
